La Jordanie, hôpital pour blessés de la rébellion syrienne

Il en existe des dizaines de ce type en Jordanie. Des sortes d’hôpitaux clandestins et d’appartements de convalescence pour blessés de l’Armée syrienne libre. Dans cet immeuble du centre-ville d’Irbid, 16 appartements servent aujourd’hui de lieu de convalescence pour 35 blessés (la majorité sont des rebelles).

There are dozens of these in Jordan : kinds of underground hospitals and recovering apartments for the wounded of the Free Syrian Army.
In this building in downtown Irbid, 16 apartments welcome 35 men, recovering from their injuries. Most of them are Syrian rebels.

L’homme qui dirige cet hôpital est Syrien, de Deraa. Comme les 5 médecins et les 6 infirmières, il est bénévole. “Nous recevons des dons de la diaspora syrienne à l’étranger et de certains pays du Golfe”.

On n’en saura pas plus.

The manager of this hospital is a Syrian, from Deraa. As for the 5 doctors and 6 nurses, he is a volunteer. “We receive donations from the Syrian diaspora abroad and from some of the Gulf countries”.

We won’t get to know more.

A en croire ce directeur, que nous appellerons Jaffar, environ 300 combattants blessés de l’Armée syrienne libre entrent tous les mois en Jordanie. “Quand les blessés arrivent à la frontière, il y a des docteurs qui les attendent et ils sont transportés dans la ville de Ramtha où ils reçoivent les premières soins. Ensuite, ils sont envoyés vers d’autres hôpitaux à Amman et à Irbid”.
Jaffar, lui, s’occupe de remettre les combattants sur pied. Il les garde “une semaine, un mois, plusieurs mois. Ça dépend de leur état de santé”.

According to the manager, who we will call Jaffar, about 300 wounded fighters of the Free Syrian Army arrive every month in Jordan. “When the wounded arrive at the border, doctors are waiting for them and they are transported to the city of Ramtha, where they receive first aid. Then they are transfered to other hospitals in Amman and Irbid.”
Then Jaffar takes care of the fighters, to make them back on their feet. He keeps them “one week, one month, several months. It depends on their health condition.”

Après leur séjour dans l’immeuble de convalescence de Jaffar, les combattants qui peuvent à nouveau marcher et porter des armes repartent se battre en Syrie aux côtés des rebelles. La plupart sont de Deraa au sud. Certains de la banlieue de Damas. Tous ont été blessés dans des bombardements ou par des tirs de snipers. Beaucoup ont perdu un membre ou l’usage de leurs jambes.

After their stay in Jaffar’s recovering building, the fighters who can walk again and carry weapons go back to fight in Syria alongside the rebels. Most of them are from Deraa, South of Syria. And some are from of the suburbs of Damascus. All were injured in shellings or by snipers. Many have lost a limb or the use of their legs.

Ce jeune homme a 17 ans. Avant d’arriver ici, c’était un sniper de l’Armée syrienne libre. “Mais je me suis fait avoir par un sniper du régime”. Touché au dos, il espère bientôt retrouver l’usage de ses jambes pour repasser en Syrie et reprendre sa Kalachnikov.

This young man is 17 years old. Before he came here, he was a sniper in the Free Syrian Army. “But I got screwed by a sniper of the regime.” Hit in the back, he now awaits to feel his legs again in order to go back to Syria and hold his Kalashnikov again

Dans la chambre à côté, Ahmed envoie des textos. Il montre fièrement sa prothèse qui remplace son mollet et son pied droits. Il dit avoir été blessé en détention : “J’avais été arrêté par le régime et placé en prison avec 34 autres personnes. Là-bas, j’ai reçu une balle dans la jambe mais personne ne m’a soigné. Et la blessure s’est infectée”. Quand l’Armée syrienne libre est venu les libérer, Ahmed a fui et est passé en Jordanie. Il a alors été transféré dans le camp de Zaatari où les médecins ont décidé de l’amputer.

In the room next door, Ahmed is texting. He proudly shows his prosthesis that replaces his right calf and foot. He said he was injured in detention: “I was arrested by the regime and sent to prison with 34 other people. There, I got shot in the leg but nobody took care of me so the injury got infected.” When the Free Syrian Army came to release them, Ahmed fled to Jordan. Here, he was transferred to Zaatari camp where doctors decided to amputate.

Cet ancien journaliste a reçu une balle dans le dos. Depuis, ses jambes ne réagissent plus. Toute la journée, allongé, il regarde les photos de son pays, la Syrie, sur internet. Il montre une image prise au tout début de la révolution à Deraa. On y voit des jeunes manifester. “On a commencé sans arme. Mais le monde n’a rien fait, il n’a fait que nous regarder, sans rien dire à Assad. Alors, à un moment on a été obligé de prendre les armes pour se défendre. Mais nous ne sommes pas des terroristes. On veut juste que notre gouvernement nous traite comme des êtres humains. Pas comme des animaux”.

This former journalist was shot in the back. Since then, his legs no longer respond. All day, lying in his bed, he looks at photos on the internet taken in his country, Syria. He shows us an image taken at the beginning of the revolution in Deraa. We see young men demonstrating. “We started without weapon. But the world did nothing, he just looks at us without telling anything to Assad. So at one point we were forced to use weapons to defend ourselves. We are not terrorists. We just want our government to treat us as human beings. Not as animals. ”

Tous gardent le sourire et l’énergie. Cet appartement, c’est juste une parenthèse dans le conflit qui les oppose au régime de Bachar Al Assad. Dès qu’ils se sentiront mieux, ils repasseront la frontière et iront rejoindre les rangs de l’Armée syrienne libre.

All of them keep smiling and are full of energy. This apartment is just a pause for them in the conflict that opposes the regime of Bashar Al Assad to the FSA. Once they feel better, they will pass the border again and will join the ranks of the Free Syrian Army.

Faut-il intervenir en Syrie? Ce qu’en pensent les réfugiés syriens en Jordanie

Dans la ville d’Irbid au nord de la Jordanie, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de la Syrie, les réfugiés syriens sont partout. Ceux qui ne sont pas dans des camps, ont élu domicile dans des immeubles du centre-ville. Certains tiennent des restaurants, vendent des téléphones portables, s’improvisent glaciers.
A Irbid aujourd’hui, la majorité de la population est soit palestinienne, soit syrienne.
En deux ans, près de 500 000 Syriens ont trouvé refuge en Jordanie selon le Haut commissariat aux Nations Unies pour les réfugiés, dont 120 000 dans le camp de Zaatari (le deuxième plus grand camp au monde après Daba au Kenya). Selon les prévisions, la Jordanie pourrait même compter jusqu’à un million de réfugiés syriens d’ici la fin de l’année.

In the city of Irbid in northern Jordan, about twenty kilometers away from Syria, Syrian refugees are everywhere. Those who are not in camps, have taken up residence in buildings downtown. Some of them run restaurants, sell mobile phones, or make ice-creams.
In Irbid today, the majority of the population is either Palestinian or Syrian.
Within the last two years, nearly 500,000 Syrians fled to Jordan according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, including 120,000 in the camp of Zaatari ( the second largest in the world after Daba in Kenya ). According to forecasts, Jordan could even host up to one million Syrian refugees by the end of the year.

Mais pour l’instant, les réfugiés ne s’intéressent qu’à une chose : la communauté internationale va t-elle intervenir militairement en Syrie pour détruire les positions de Bachar Al-Assad ?

But for now, Syrian refugees are only interested in one thing: will the international community intervene militarily in Syria against the President Bashar Al -Assad positions?

Dans cet immeuble, 24 familles syriennes habitent. Cette femme a fui sa ville (dont elle ne veut pas dire le nom par peur des représailles) en février dernier avec ses 6 enfants. « Mon mari est en prison en Syrie depuis plus d’un an. Je n’ai pas beaucoup de nouvelles de lui mais je sais qu’il va mal. On a besoin de la communauté internationale pour nous aider. On n’a pas d’autre solution pour l’instant. Mais comment être sûr que ces bombardements vont bien toucher les positions de Bachar Al Assad et pas celles de l’armée syrienne libre ? Comment être sûr que ce n’est pas la population, une nouvelle fois, qui va souffrir ?».

24 Syrian families are living in this building. This woman fled from a Syrian city (which she doesn’t want to name in fear of reprisals) in February with her six children. “My husband has been in prison in Syria for over a year. I don’t get a lot of information about him but i know his health is really bad. We need the international community to help us. There is no other solution for the moment. But how to be sure that these bombings well hit President Bashar Al Assad’s posiitons and not those of the Free Syrian Army ? How can we be sure that these strikes won’t hit the population ?”

A l’étage en dessous, il y a Mohammed, un jeune homme de 28 ans. Il est allongé sur un lit dans une chambre. Il ne peut pas bouger. Il a perdu l’usage de ses jambes au printemps 2012 après un bombardement à Homs. Il a été blessé alors qu’il revenait de la boulangerie.
Il y a un an, il a réussi à rejoindre la Jordanie avec sa mère. Depuis, il suit la situation de loin et ne croit pas qu’une intervention militaire puisse changer quoi que ce soit.
« Ce n’est pas une bonne idée d’intervenir. Ce sera encore pire après. Ce sera juste des destructions en plus en Syrie. Il n’y a que Dieu qui peut nous aider. Ou alors Bachar Al Assad doit changer d’avis et arrêter tout ça. Ou bien il faudrait aussi que tous les jeunes hommes qui ont quitté la Syrie y retournent pour aller se battre au coté de l’armée syrienne libre. »
Sa mère, voilée, remet le drap sur ses pieds. Elle n’ose rien dire mais des larmes coulent sur ses joues : « je n’ai rien à dire. J’ai tout perdu. Je n’ai plus rien. J’ai juste réussi à venir ici avec mon fils blessé. Il n’y a plus rien à dire sur la Syrie ».

On the floor below, lives Mohammed, a 28-year old man. He is lying on a bed in a room. He can not move. He lost the use of his legs in the spring of 2012 after a bombing in Homs. He was injured while returning from the bakery.
A year ago, he was able to flee to Jordan with his mother. Since then, he is monitoring the situation from far away, and does not believe that military intervention would change anything in Syria.
“This is not a good idea to intervene. The situation will only be worse. It will mean more destruction in Syria. Only God can help us. Or Bashar Al Assad must change his mind and stop all this. Or it would also requires that all young men who have left Syria, go back there to fight alongside the Free Syrian Army . ”
His veiled mother arranges the sheet over her son’s feet. She dares not say anything but tears are streaming down her cheeks. “I have nothing to say. I lost everything. I have nothing left. I just managed to come here with my wounded son. There is nothing more to say about Syria. “

Dans un autre appartement, cette femme raconte qu’elle a perdu son mari, tué par des hommes de Bachar Al Assad. En Jordanie depuis un an, elle est contre une intervention des Américains. Elle craint que la Syrie ne devienne un 2^ème Irak.
« Je pense que la solution aujourd’hui ne peut venir que des pays arabes, c’est à eux de nous aider, pas aux puissances étrangères. Si les Américains interviennent en Syrie, ça risque d’entraîner tout le Moyen-Orient dans la guerre ».
Avec ses 3 enfants, elle ne se voit pas retourner en Syrie. « Même si la situation s’améliore je ne rentrerai pas là-bas. J’ai vu des photos de ma ville et il ne reste plus rien. Je n’ai plus rien là-bas. Je ne veux pas rentrer ». Elle soupire : « Bachar al Assad est prêt à tuer son propre fils pour rester en poste en Syrie. »

In another apartment, a woman says she lost her husband, who was killed by gunmen of Bashar Al Assad. She has been in Jordan for the last year and she is against an American intervention. She fears that Syria will become a second Iraq.
“I think today the solution can only come from Arab countries, it is up to them to help us, not foreign countries. If the Americans intervene in Syria, it would lead the entire Middle East into war.”
With her three children, she does not see herself returning to Syria. “Even if the situation improves there, I will not go back. I saw pictures of my city and there is nothing left. I have nothing there. I do not want to go back. ” She sighs : “Bashar al-Assad would kill his own son to stay on in Syria.”

Ne pas intervenir militairement en Syrie, c’est aussi l’avis Mahmoud, un ancien policier qui a fui la Syrie il y a 14 mois.
« J’ai fui, parce qu’en tant que policier, le régime me demandait de tirer sur les manifestants dans les rues. Et je n’avais pas le choix. C’était soit tu tires, soit on te tue. Mais moi je ne voulais pas tirer sur mes frères, sur mon peuple. Alors je suis parti »
Selon lui, il n’y a que les Syriens qui peuvent aider la Syrie, personne d’autre. Pour cela, il milite pour un soutien tactique et financier à la rébellion, pas une intervention militaire qui arrive bien trop tard : « C’est vraiment une honte d’intervenir maintenant 2 ans après. Si la communauté internationale avait voulu sauver la Syrie, il aurait fallut le faire dès le début »

According to him, only Syrians can help Syria, nobody else. That’s why, he advocates for a tactical and financial support to the rebellion, not a military intervention which comes, anyway, too late. “It’s really a shame to intervene now two years later. If the international community had wanted to save Syria, it would had done from the start”.
